Good news from the girly front

Novell marketing campaign and ads: sometime ago, Novell cracked female open source community up picturing Linux as a girl in their new advertising videos.

She is Linux!Click here to see the video

That was really cool. But I went to a Novell tradeshow this week, and paid attention to their products brochures, and I realize they always tend to picture lots of females as engineers or “people working on a chart” – not sure if they mean business, sales or what kind of people. But it sure makes anyone comfortable by not been an alien for them. Kudos to Novell too.

XKCD – Thanks to friends who sent the link to that cartoon which also were posted everywhere in the “she’s geeky” blogsphere.

Linux for Women(?) – not sure if this is good news, but apparently a troll’s idea convinced some people. We had another troll attack last week in Linuxchix, but the idea he sent around also to Debian Women was taken seriously. LWN.net published two perspectives about that idea, and I’m with the “Linux distro for women? Thanks, but no”. One of the beauty of Open Source is that you can fork and change anything you want, but don’t count on me for that one.

“We found women in tech, so why are you still not reporting about them?” – that was an amazing gesture from a guy who saw his female co-organizer and hard worker not been recognized by doing so. Chris Messina is one of the organizers of Web2Open unconference, and reports about an article published in BusinessWeek magazine about the event. The article “particular undermines the credit that Tara deserves for the incredible amount of work that she did to make Web2Open happen. If anyone, she’s the one that really deserves to be called out in the article.” It is really exciting see nowadays lots of examples from guys in standing up and recognizing the effort of their female co-workers. Kudos to Chris – and to Tara Hunt for her amazing job!

The Beautiful People

That’s is to remember to never believe in everything you hear. I was kind of afraid going to Marilyn Manson‘s concert. I don’t like even movies with fake blood and worms and similar, so I didn’t wanted to go to a show to see any disgusting thing. But I was really bored, I haven’t been in any good party or concert in São Paulo this year, so I couldn’t loose the opportunity, and I let my friend Marina convince me and Piter PUNK, her husband, to go. Thank you Marina!

As usual, we waited some hours in the line, then inside. A very boring gothic guy was alone on the line in front of us, and trying to make friends. But he was so boring, only talking about his rings or cape or beard… I mean c’mon, what a poser. Luckily, Piter and I share the same sense of humor, so when for the third time he tried to make me listen to some Depeche Mode music (!!!!), the following dialog happened:

Me: I don’t like this type of music
Boring guy: what? that’s awesome
Me: C’mon, Depeche Mode, The Cure, A-ha, is the same thing for me
Boring guy (trying to look cooler and making a stronger voice): yeah, but I have the best Metallica’s album, ha ha, what you think?
Piter: Tell us, you came here before to buy Sandy and Junior* tickets, they were all sold out than you bought Marilyn Manson’s ticket, right?

Laughing and peace, finally.

*Sandy and Junior are a very cheesy pop tenage idols, something like Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys level. They are going to play in the same place next month I think, and the tickets were already sold out.

Finally inside, the opening band was Maldita, a band from Rio de Janeiro. I never before saw a band so hated by the audience 😀 the band was really cool, the singer was a looser, maybe that’s why. Another hour waiting, having my feet smashed by the crowd, but I really wanted to see Manson closer. And he knows how to play with the audience. The show started half hour late, and people were going crazy, screaming “stop drinking and sniffing and come here play for us!!!”. When the lights, the fog and the first accords announced the beginning of the show, the sonofabgentleman made everybody wait for a couple more minutes before entering. When he starts to sing “If I Was Your Vampire”, the roar of the audience was amazing. The microphone had a big knife shape, and the lights were all red, but that was the farthest he went on the show.

Unfortunately, at this point, Marina was in tears – she was waiting for “10 long mot********* years” as Marilyn himself stated, since his last show in Brazil which she was not able to attend but was a fan even before that. We were not seeing a thing, thanks to our underprivileged height. So we went backwards, and saw the entire show from a point where we could see Marilyn all the time. Later, he spent most time one meter away from were we were before, but … who can talk to a hysteric fan 🙂

He played most songs from the new album, “Eat me, Drink me”. My favorite moment was the start of “Putting Holes in Happiness”.

“Blow out the candles
On all my Frankensteins
At least my death wish will come true.
You taste like Valentine’s and
We cry,
You’re like a birthday.
I should have picked the photograph
It lasted longer than you.”

The guitar player is brilliant. There was “Irresponsible Hate Anthem”, “Sweet Dreams” and “Heart-Shaped Glasses”, and that made me even go to tears. I know it doesn’t mean that, but for me it does:

Heart-shaped glass

The thing I hate in those shows is the duration: 1:20h. I had energy for a lot more head banging. But even so, it was really cool and relieving to scream like crazy and exorcise some of the voices in my head }:) I’m no MM’s fan, but that was a hell of a concert. No theater, no mutilation or chocking actions, just clear and loud metal. Lovely 🙂

Who sees me in suit and leopard fingerprint shoes, exchanging business card in a very “corporative” event the very next morning, doesn’t know my Sumalita Gárcia side…

Valeu Marina!

Eu: ah, fala sério, Depeche Mode, The Cure, A-ha, tudo a mesma coisa

Quando ele apareceu e começou a cantar “If I Was Your Vampire”, o rugido da multidão era impressionante.

Ele tocou a maioria das músicas do album novo, “Eat me, Drink me”.

“Blow out the candles
On all my Frankensteins
At least my death wish will come true.
You taste like Valentine’s and
We cry,
You’re like a birthday.
I should have picked the photograph
It lasted longer than you.”

Heart-shaped glass

A única coisa que eu odeio nestes shows é a duração: 1:20h.

Tired of being sexy

I can’t believe just now I took time to listen what everybody told me I would love. This band is a group of girls from São Paulo, and have the best name ever: Cansei de Ser Sexy – Tired of being Sexy. For those who don’t know, I love alternative things, and their sound mix lots of things I like, mostly guitar and electronic sounds. All that been as non girly as they can be. According to their website, they are oppening for Gwen Stefani shows. Now I need to wait them to come back… so many times I saw flyers of them at Outs, a very underground bar here in São Paulo, but it was never at the days I used to go. I don’t go there anymore since it became another hype with long lines to get in there… when people find another hype, I will go there again 🙂

Brazilian Politicians – according to Uncyclopedia

According to the local folklore, Brazilian politicians can only be killed with stakes, holy water or exorcisms from the Pope himself. The most popular theory is that they are Sauron’s orcs in disguise, while some favor the idea that they are, in fact, Dracula’s poor cousins enjoying their retirement in a tropical country. Support for the latter comes from famed politician-slash-dark-wizard Ioseph Dircaeus, who has been seen riding a Nazgul in the sky. His natural enemies are old men with canes and men abused by their wives (ie, Jefferson). They also tend not to like orcs.

They can be separated into 3 subsections:

* The Corrupt: Approximately 99.37% of the Brazilian government can be classified here.
* The Pure: Uncorrupted as of yet. Also known as “first-termers” or “idiots”
* The Inane: President Squidward.

More about Brazil.

La Mainson Dieu

Sorry folks, Portuguese only. It is such a pity for those who don’t speak it. You can’t understand saudade, neither Legião Urbana lyrics.

Se dez batalhões viessem à minha ruaRenato
E 20 mil soldados batessem à minha porta
Não pretendo me aproveitar
E de qualquer forma quem volta
Sozinho pra casa sou eu
Sexo compra dinheiro e companhia
Mas nunca amor e amizade, eu acho
E depois de um dia difícil
Pensei ter visto você
Entrar pela minha janela e dizer:
– Eu sou a tua morte
Vim conversar contigo
Vim te pedir abrigo
Preciso do teu calor
Eu sou
Eu sou
Eu sou a pátria que lhe esqueceu
O carrasco que lhe torturou
O general que lhe arrancou os olhos
O sangue inocente
De todos os desaparecidos
Os choque elétrico e os gritos
– Parem por favor, isto dói
Eu sou
Eu sou
Eu sou a tua morte
E vim lhe visitar como amigo
Devemos flertar com o perigo
Seguir nossos instintos primitivos
Quem sabe não serão estes
Nossos últimos momentos divertidos?
Eu sou a lembrança do terror
Estejamos alertas
Porque o terror continua
Só mudou de cheiro
E de uniforme
Eu sou a tua morte
E lhe quero bem
Esqueça o mundo, vim lhe explicar o que virá
Porque eu sou
Eu sou
Eu sou

Cute and simple actions to encourage women

About two years ago, during Conisli – an annual free software conference that happens in São Paulo – there was a dinner hosted by Mandriva. It was a cool dinner, good food, great people, my friend Lulyis playing on the piano. When the dessert came, each plate had different pictures of penguins. Soon, someone found a female penguin! That was over cool for the Linuxchix there and for the guys who always supported us, so we went hunting penguins on the plates. We found several pictures of female and male penguins, and Mandriva definitely won several cool points with everybody.

We were preparing the conference for tomorrow, and there is several goodies sent from some companies, and Mandriva is one of them. I was very pleased to see the males and females penguins featured in some stickers again.

Mandriva stickers

Today also a friend of my pointed out the new Firefox t-shirts. Look a that:

Firefox tshirt

It is a shame for us that they don’t have all the t-shirts in female sizes, but I know it is not commercial viable. But the two available are just so so so so cute, I have to have those!

Thanks to Mandriva and Mozilla Foundation for their thoughtful actions. Simpler actions like that really made us feel part of the gang. 🙂

Veja:

Firefox tshirt

Linuxchix Brazilian Conference 2007 – We Will Rock You

There are always bad things that come to good. Due some misunderstandings, we were not expecting the subscriptions to the V Linuxchix Brazilian Conference to be closed today by the co-organizing company Tempo Real. We missed the fact they needed to close it to give us information about the participants two days before. Since that, people are dialing like crazy to Tempo Real, to Priscilla, looking for us on #linuxchix-br and sending mails. We put a note on the site saying people could subscribe at the event, but we forgot to mention “in the day of the event”. So people went to IESB to guarantee their subscription. And Priscilla, until two weeks ago, was again almost having a heart attack thinking “will anyone attend to it?” I told you!

From previous year, I learned that in the last week the number of subscriptions double and about 10% more occurs in the local. This year is kind of unusual higher the last minute subscription, I believe. But it is very very cool to se the response for all the work. What can I say, we joined together KDElio Castro from KDE, Piter Punk from Slackware, Kov from Debian, Julio Neves from Shell Scripting , Luciano Ramalho from Python, Rubens Queiroz from Dicas-l, Alessandro Fariafrom NetiTec; we have three international speakers who are the actual maintainers or developers of their projects; we have 32 talks and tutorials, 8 of them presented by women; and several not so famous but very motivated to present various talks. Linuxchix Conference always cared about giving changes to most people as possible to present their work, only based on the proposal, not so much for the curriculum. I believe we helped lots of people to gain experience on that.

So, are you also feeling sorry for those who are not coming? Then take lots of pictures and make reports about what you are going to see there. Let’s share the joy!

pt_BR

Vamos compartilhar a diversão!
